Flourish Tuscany

In the summer of 2018, a dear friend invited me on an 8-day tour of Tuscany.  It changed my life forever.

As a life-long student of art and design, culinary arts and photography, this trip was a pivotal moment  for me. As the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence and Tuscany’s artistic legacy is second to none.

Awe-inspiring masterpieces. Cypress-covered hills and winding roads leading to walled medieval towns, packed with ancient architecture and traditions still inhabited. Hand-painted frescoes dating back to the Middle Ages. Marble and alabaster structures which defy all sense of possibility. Exploring the very caves of Carrara from which Michelangelo’s marble statue of David was extracted. Scarlet-red poppies dotting the hillsides winding up to stone fortresses filled with priceless Etruscan art and paintings. Ruby-red Chianti.  Pungent pecorino cheese.  Buttery prosciutto and Parma.  Centuries-old lessons in the home of an Italian with pillow-like hand-rolled pastas which melt in your mouth.  Sunrise hot-air-balloon over Tuscany leaving you floating in-between reality and a dream…

This was the Tuscany that stole my heart.  This IS the Tuscany I wish to share with you!  This is NOT a tour that you will find in a travel brochure or website. This is an experience! YOU WILL LIVE IN TUSCANY.

On the back of my Flourish business card, there is a definition of service which reads:

Con-nois-seur: Person who through study and experience, has a great deal of knowledge and appreciation in the fine arts, cuisines and is a good judge in matters of taste.

Am I a travel agent? No.  However, I am a student of life; a curator of beauty, art, and cultural experiences found off the beaten path.  I have found the sights and sounds of life that others WILL miss while standing in line for the “ordinary tour.”  This trip is about “living in Tuscany” to the fullest; if only for seven glorious days.  This trip is an abundant gift for the senses. You will see...touch...taste...smell and hear the amazing gifts which ARE Tuscany like never before.

I have done the groundwork.  I have traveled the paths...slept in the beds...driven the winding roads...tasted the fare...and yes, enjoyed the wine!  I have secured valuable relationships with shop owners, artisans, painters, musicians, restauranteurs, and inn keepers which will make this journey a dream-come-true for you, as it has been for the many clients who have joined me; some, now for a second and even a third time.

I have now even written the book, Finding the Pieces, which is available here, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, as well as fabulous stores near you.  Who knows... perhaps you will play a role in my next book!

Your 7-night Tuscan adventure awaits on a stunning farm tucked between Florence and Siena in the very heart of Chianti. This organic farm producing olive oil products and award-winning Chianti has been in the Paolella/Guercini family for over 5 generations.

As I turned onto this vineyard-laden road in the spring of 2018, I knew this beautiful agriturismo was home. Riccardo, Paola and Francesco’s hospitality make guests feel comfortable, special and most welcomed. Before departing, you will be family.

During your stay, you’ll enjoy an authentic five-course Tuscan dinner on Paola’s 15-foot table which has occupied the same space since the early 1800’s.

Ravioli, tagliatelle, tortellini, or gnocchi some of your favorites? Then the Pasta with Paola cooking class will be right up your alley. If pasta making isn’t your thing, a pizza class with Guri can be arranged. Guri’s pizza will be on the itinerary even if you aren’t an inspiring chef. It is life-changing pizza!

Although not dubbed as a Culinary Tour, you will enjoy some of the finest meals in the region. While they might not be on Zagat’s list, each ristorante has been carefully procured and tested, much like a prized white truffle which might land on your plate if in season! Tuscany is known for peasant food; however, it is rich in flavor, steeped in tradition and best savored slowly alongside a glass of its famed Chianti!

Small group travel enables clients a more custom designed week of experiences. Many of my clients have traveled to Italy before, but this is a deep dive in the culture and people of this amazing country…not hopping on and off a bus. You will be “living” here.

Most packages include well-known cities and hill towns such as Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Volterra and Lucca. However, Kim is an explorer and has discovered less beaten paths, some which have even included meetings with famous butcher, Dario Cecchini and famed tenor, Andrea Bocelli. Expect the unexpected.

Your excursions might include drifting over the heart of Chianti in a hot-air-balloon, or gliding down the River Arno at sunset.  You may even elect to spend the night in a medieval castle, nestled in the mountains overlooking the Ligurian Sea.

In Florence, we will stand at the feet of David and walk around Brunelleschi’s Santa Maria del Fiore, the third largest Duomo (cathedral) in the world. Merely resting in its shadow is an awe-inspiring moment as is our visit to the bejeweled Medici Chapel.

This complex, with its large dome and lavish interior, was conceived to celebrate the power of the Medici dynasty which had successfully ruled Florence for centuries. You will feel their presence, as if they are walking these cobbled streets beside you.

Power and grandeur were not only achieved in Firenze, but also within the marbled masterpiece of the Duomo of Siena, which dates back to the 12th century. This cathedral is renowned for stunning Gothic architecture, intricate design and beautiful frescoes by famous artists such as Donatello and Michelangelo. The cylindrical Piazza del Campo, home of the famous Palio horse race is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is regarded as one of Europe’s greatest medieval squares.

Quieter moments will be experienced such as watching the sunset through the western gate in Monteriggioni. This arch now occupies the cover of Finding the Pieces, Kim’s first book. You will understand why this place led to the transformation of her life and is even the reason you are investing this time with her now.

There are antique markets to be shopped, art galleries and artisans to be visited. You will be intoxicated by the earthy aromas of Italian leather as it is crafted into the finest coats and handbags in the world. The butcher shops and fresh produce of Mercato Centrale will be woven into your memories as you bite into a buttery slice of prosciutto or the perfect piece of Parmesano Reggiano.

This trip is so much more than a vacation. It is an experience…it is a journey.

FAQ's

Why Travel with Flourish Tuscany?

  1. Each and every location, restaurant, shop, guide, driver and accommodation has been tested and experienced.
  2. Waking up and not worrying about driving (or parking!) in a foreign country removes many of the risks and surprises which can ruin a trip. Many private drivers charge above what you pay for your entire trip with Flourish. Our goal is to create a smooth and comfortable experiences for you without all the worries!
  3. Italy is a relatively small country. I have found such pleasure in adapting to their mindset of less is more. Simple beauties are much clearer when viewing them on foot and not from a bus window OR following a big group with a flag. Traveling in a smaller group and vehicle enables you to enter some city walls others may never see.
  4. Connecting people is one of my gifts. On this trip, your world will become a bigger place. You will meet Italian colleagues who now have become my family and friends. Although your world will increase, you will also see how small it is as you experience daily life with other friends across the world. You will also form a new bond with whom you travel...kind of like leaving after summer camp. Goodbyes will be difficult!
  5. From my very first guests
(many who have returned) to the present, few have left without experiencing a sense of renewal and revitalization. In these ever-challenging times, stepping
away and enjoying the peace and beauty of Italy feeds the spirit. From the fresh and non-processed food which is served to the crisp and clean air we will breathe, you will leave transformed and filled with gratitude.

What is an Agriturismo? What will my accommodations look like?

You will be staying on an agriturismo…which simply means a farm designed to also accommodate guests. Many also include dinner, kind of like our B&B’s in America…but SO much more!

In 2016, the Paolellas completed renovations on the ancient barn adjacent to their home and Agriturismo Annita was born. While its original exterior features remain, the interior apartments were carefully restored in the Tuscan style with terracotta floors, open beam ceilings, hand wrought iron railings and are adorned with treasured antiques which have remained in Paola’s family for over a century.

Each apartment has its own private entrance and is fully heated or air-conditioned. All rooms have queen beds and exquisite Italian linens. Each also has a private bath with a shower and share a washing machine.  An open common space for dining and gathering is centrally located in the apartment and also provides a queen sleeper sofa in the living area. Each apartment also has a well-appointed and fully-stocked kitchen.

Weather -permitting, a pool is available and is a lovely way to spend a lazy afternoon, unless the gravel road beckons you for a long walk or run to work off the carbs of this country!

You will not find a lovelier place to enjoy your time in Tuscany!

I want to travel on my own. Can I purchase a travel guide from you?

Like to go it alone? Many have inquired about personal travel without using my services. I have worked long and hard to create these magical moments for my clients, but would be happy to share these valuable contacts and travel tips for a fee.

Please see the shop page for this travel guide which can be purchased and downloaded. Trust me, it will be some of the best “trip

What my clients say about their trip..

You don't just tour Italy with Kim, you experience it. The sights, sounds, food, art, history, culture and most importantly the people. We have traveled twice with Kim and can't wait to do it again. There is no way to describe this adventure, you must experience it for yourself. Our time in Tuscany with Kim will forever be etched in our memories. It will change your perspective on life.

- Alan and Shannon Thompson - Nashville, Tennessee

I felt as if I was leaving a treasure as we departed to go back to the states. The Tuscan landscapes, the food, our accommodations and most of all, the precious family...everything was perfect. I hope to return soon for more adventures on the backroads with Kim!

- Leigh Ann Hanback - Meridianville, AL

The most amazing trip of my life! I heard about Kim through a mutual friend and her trip sounded like what my husband and I had been searching for. Staying in an agriturismo in the heart of Tuscany was incredible as was the Italian family who owned it. We became family. Kim not only planned our activities and drove, she also helped us experience it! I left a part of my heart there and hope to return as soon as possible!

- Stephanie Fenton - Athens, AL

Having never been out of the U.S. before, Flourish Tuscany was the way to go! I had the joy of experiencing this with my sister and two others we did not know. We were instant friends and it was absolutely the trip of a lifetime! Kim removes the stress of driving, finding restaurants, managing time...all the things that go into travel...and she did it all seamlessly! My only complaint was not having MORE time. Icing on the cake was getting to be a part of the Paolella family and working the harvest with them. Gathering around their table was incredible. Italy was on my bucket list, but it still is because I cannot wait to return!

- Karla Brent - Dallas, TX

Our time in Tuscany with Kim was the trip of a lifetime. She planned our days and nights around what we wanted to see and do. Her relationships with the locals made our visit unique. It was an unforgettable experience and memory shared with two of our closest friends!

- Jeff Rickard - Birmingham, AL

My trip to Italy with Kim was amazing. I am a world traveler and this was one of the best trips I have ever experienced. Kim knows wonderful out-of-the-way places and restaurants and people! I cannot wait to return!

J.A. Scott - Guntersville, AL

We spent a glorious week in Italy with Kim in the fall of 2022, savoring the fabulous sites, sounds and tastes of Tuscany. She carefully tailored our activities to match our likes and preferences. It was magical!

Steven Vinyard - Anniston, AL

When my wife and I decided to go to Italy with friends, we all wanted a trip that made us feel like locals, not tourists. We desired an insider's perspective of where to experience the art and architecture of the Old Country. We wanted to meet the people, eat the food and drink the wine, like Italians! Kim delivered by knowing how, when, who and where to go each day so our trip was efficient and packed with local experiences. If you are traveling to Italy and want to take all the guesswork out, plus experience true Italian lifestyle, get the guide and friend who will produce those memories, which age like a fine wine...just like is produced by the family nestled on that little farm in Tavarnelle! Get Kim Whitaker!

Senator Garlan Gudger - Cullman, AL

We were not sure what to expect when we signed up. We wanted to explore Italy more fully but were hesitant about language barriers and being with people we didn’t know. As we prayed for safety and for all to “mesh” we added a request for God to reveal Himself through the places we visited and the people we met. He SHOWED UP BIG. We have struggled believing God actively participates in our lives but after spending a week in Kim's Italian home with her family, His presence is undeniable. From the extraordinary beauty of the country, the joy and spirit of the people, the food and hospitality; our time spent with Kim was perfect and more proof. She is an instrument of the Father and we feel privileged to have spent a week there with her. We can’t wait to return with our grown children next year!
